This week, Internationally acclaimed woodturner, Theo Haralampou will take centre stage from his studio workshop in Brisbane Australia, to demonstrate techniques, share knowledge and his woodturning knowhow.

You will find an excellent learning environment for woodturners of all skill levels, as Theo talks about timber selection, and demonstrates mounting techniques for optimum safety and performance.

We learn about grain direction and how this is critical for determining tool presented and the resulting direction of cut.

In this project Theo will cover:

  • Blank selection and preparation.
  • Hidden tenon mounting and why it is preferred to a recess.
  • The absolute importance of grain direction in determining tool cutting direction.
  • How to use your tool rest to control shear scraping in a straight line.
  • Tips on avoid the sharp corners when turning and sanding.

Turning a Live Edge Beefwood Bowl

Finishing Bottoms, Bowls & Live Edge Platters

In this Live Session from Brisbane, Australia, Theo will share his techniques on how he finishes his natural edge bowls and platters. We will learn how Theo reverse mounts the work, forms the foot and finishing the bark on the natural edge.  

In this project Theo will cover:

  • How to finish the natural bark edge of a bowl.
  • Rescue remedies for lost bark.
  • Several ways to reverse mount a natural edge bowl or platter.
  • Tools and techniques for creating the base of a bowl.

Sweet Treats & Turning Techniques!!

Part 1…Cupcake Boxes.

This week’s demo is all about fun….sprinkled with some ingenious Turning Techniques.

Theo will show us how to turn attractive little cupcake boxes which can hide all sorts of goodies such as jellybeans, smarties and M&Ms.

To make the fluted cups, Theo will share how to set up a router and a router table, with a guide to control the depth of cut…. plus we learn all about indexing.

Theo will show us many different styles of toppings for the cupcakes. With colouring and texturing techniques, we can create swirls and cherries as well as hundreds and thousands….we can’t wait!!

Part 2 – Sweet Treats & Turning Techniques!!

Part 2…Doughnuts and Ice Cream.

In this weeks session we follow on from the previous Cupcake project, and dive into more Sweet Treats and Turning Techniques.

Create a single, double or triple layered ice cream with a cherry on top, and learn plenty of new turning techniques in the processes.

Strawberry, Chocolate or Vanilla?…learn about colours, finishes and how to texture the wafer cone, with spiralling and knurling tools . 

Theo shows us how to turn a perfect ‘Torus’ on the lathe to exact dimensions.  We will learn several methods of holding the torus to turn both sides. The outcome creates the perfect dougnut….and to finish off, Theo will show us how to create a beautiful sugary coating… without using sugar.

Fine Spindle Turning 101

It’s difficult to improve on nature, however….

This is your Fine Turning 101 session, where so many techniques are uncovered around spindle gouge control.

In this demonstration, Theo collaborates with the delicate shell of a sea creature, mounted on a finely turned stand.

We learn how to illuminate these delicate gifts from nature, with tiny LED’s. The light shines bright through hundreds of micro-holes creating a mini fantasy light show, making perfect presents for those who appreciate objets d’art.

Theo’s Mallet – with Turned Oval Handle

Is it Thor’s Hammer?…naah..it’s Theo’s Mallet !!

In this session, Theo guides us how to create this great utility item for the workshop or kitchen. 

It can be uses as a ‘persuader’ for stubborn woodworking joints, as a meat tenderizer for the BBQ, or for knocking in tent pegs.  The uses are endless!!

Turning an oval handle on 3 centres is the main feature of this demonstration.

In this project Theo will cover:

  • The importance of grain direction and alignment
  • Drilling the handle hole centrally on the lathe
  • Getting the best finish from a roughing gouge
  • Uncovering the mystery of off-centre turning to form the oval handle

The Seal with Ball

In this project, Theo shares how to turn one of his advanced projects “The Seal with Ball”. This is an artistic piece incorporating a sphere ‘and’ eccentric turning, all from a single piece of timber.

Theo advances on his sphere turning sessions by first turning the ball on centre, using the shadow technique, and then the piece is ‘off-set’ at the base using different centres to form each side of the seal.

Theo will show how to shape is created on one side and then tapered to form the other! This is not one to be missed!

In this project Theo will cover:

  • Sphere turning using a shadow and a back board.
  • Secure mounting techniques for eccentric turning.
  • Turning in air and caressing the bevel.
  • The difference between slicing and cutting the wood.
  • Preventing ‘knuckle knocks’ when sanding.

The Holey Bauble – An Introduction to Indexing.

In this demonstration we are treated to one of Theo’s signature projects, which helps to demystify the complexities of‘indexing’.

Theo walks us step-by-step through the marking out process, and demonstrates how to put the indexing features of your lathe or chuck to work.

We learn how to make jigs for indexing and hole boring, and get deep into the techniques of fine spindle gouge control…..using a popsicle stick.

The result will be a beautiful hanging decoration that you can make for the festive season.

Treen has become highly collectable, and covers a broad spectrum of items such as wooden plates and platters, needle cases, chopping boards, spoons and scoops. It’s great to make items that can be used
