Finishing Techniques for Hats & Helmets

In this demonstration Andrew will turn a crest for the Corinthian helmet, and then create one of his signature stands to display both his hats and helmet.

Treen for the Table

Platter and Bowl

The definition for the term Treen is ‘of the tree’ and describes various small functional handmade items, made from wood.

Examples of Cups, plates, bowls and spoons that are crafted from single pieces of timber can be found that date back centuries, and are highly collectable items.

Small Hats from the Magnificent Seven

Andrew shares how he makes his signature small hats, using only four tools from his ‘magnificent seven’.

This demonstration includes side grain turning techniques, and will show you how light can be used to gauge wall thickness with translucency. In addition, we learn about the joy and flexibility of working with wet timber.

For this demonstration debut, Andrew will be sharing a multitude of turning techniques and discliplines from his studio workshop in County Durham, England, to create Sidney the Smoking Snowman.

In this project Andrew will cover:

  • Characteristics of timber.
  • Centering and mounting.
  • Optimum speeds for spindle and side grain turning.
  • Spindle/Bowl turning tools, grinding techniques and finishing.
  • Safety equipment and risk assessment.
  • Bending the finished hat to shape.

Corinthian Helmets

In this session Andrew will continue with another of his signature pieces, the Corinthian helmet.

In addition to the magnificent 7 turning tools, Andrew will introduce some hollowing tools and techniques into the mix.

We also welcome our special guest, Pat Carroll to the panel, who is an expert in the hollowing process.

The demonstration will include turning between centres and the use of bright light to gauge wall thickness, this time working mainly in end grain orientation.

Embellish, Decorate, Enhance

In this demonstration Andrew will share with us the various techniques he uses to embellish, decorate, enhance and finish his hats, helmets and stands.

Learn about the characteristics and application techniques of stains, waxes, cremes, metallic and acrylic paints.

This one is not to be missed, as Andrew guides us on the use of airbrushing, along with techniques that include blending and ‘alla prima’, otherwise known as painting ‘wet-on-wet’.
